Interview date:  08 February 2018

A post of Senior Research Associate is available immediately in the Mechanical Behaviour of Materials Laboratory (http://www.port.ac.uk/mechanical-behaviour-of-materials/), University of Portsmouth, UK. The successful candidate will work on a collaborative project on crack tip characterisation using Digital Image/Volume Correlation and Finite Element Analysis. The group has a wealth of research knowledge of fatigue and fracture of engineering materials and structures, gained from collaborative work with aero-engine industry over many years. The focus of the project is on a fundamental understanding of crack tip strain field and crack closure. The project would require working with data collected using Digital Image/Volume Correlation, and using finite element analysis to model the full field near-tip displacements/strains towards a more physical approach to modeling fatigue crack growth.

The successful candidate will ideally have a PhD, or close to complete a PhD, in Computational/Experimental Mechanics or a related engineering discipline. The project will involve using ABAQUS to model crack problems, developing pre and post processing tools as necessary. Skills in computer programing are desirable. The appointment will be for 18 months and available immediately, with a possible limited extension for a further period of time.
