Investigating the role of mitochondrial dysregulation in brain tumours

We are seeking to recruit a talented postdoctoral scientist with experience in molecular and cellular biology to provide maternity cover for our current Mitochondria and Metabolism Sub-theme Leader within the Brain Tumour Research Centre.

This post is available for up to 30 September 2018 (or the early return of the post holder) to work on active and ongoing projects in an exciting and growing research area that investigates the role of mitochondria and related parameters in brain tumours, in particular the most common and malignant primary brain tumour in adults, glioblastoma. The project capitalises on existing publications and unpublished data that is yielding novel insights into the role of mitogenomic elements and enzymes in glioblastoma cell behaviours, including drug sensitivity.

The Senior Research Fellow will be part of the Brain Tumour Research Centre Mitochondria and Metabolism Sub-theme within the School of Pharmacy and Biomedical Sciences, at the University of Portsmouth. The Brain Tumour Research Centre has recently been refurbished and has dedicated laboratories with multiple pieces of equipment and established assays for histology, cell culture, cellular and molecular biology, imaging, in addition to a brand new metabolic suite.

Candidates should have a PhD in a related field of molecular and/or cellular biology and experience in cell culture, protein/ nucleotide extraction, PCR, western blotting, gene modulation, enzyme activity assays and cell functional assays and related techniques. The collection, collation, analysis and interpretation of descriptive and quantitative data should be demonstrated with publications in good quality refereed journals. Additional demonstrable research knowledge, particularly of mitochondrial genetics and biology and neuro-oncology would be a significant advantage.

The Senior Research Fellow should be able to manage the day-to-day running of a number of related research projects including assisting the work of junior researchers. Good communication skills will be key to the successful working with associated team members, including internal and external collaborators. The Senior Research Fellow will be expected to acquire new data and to analyse existing data in order to complete publications, and to play a lead role in drafting of these manuscripts.

Informal enquiries are actively encouraged and can be made to Dr Rhiannon McGeehan (current Mitochondria and Metabolism Sub-theme lead) 02392 842118, Rhiannon.McGeehan@port.ac.uk or Professor Geoff Pilkington, Head of Centre, Geoff.pilkington@port.ac.uk
