Senior Research Associate (RNA Synthetic Biology) x 2

Employment type:  Fixed-term contract (until 31 July 2022)

Employment basis:  Full-time

The University of Portsmouth is a dynamic and ambitious institution with a track record of success. One of only four universities in the south east of England to achieve a Gold rating in the Teaching Excellence Framework, it is also ranked 21st in the 2020 Guardian League Table University Guide, and 113th in the Times Higher Young University World Rankings.

With the recent award of £5.8 million from Research England, the CEI creates a flagship research hub focused on delivering transformative enzyme-enabled solutions for circular recycling of plastics. The unique approach of the CEI pipeline is to Discover new enzymes from the environment that break down plastics; Engineer these enzymes and their production mechanisms to optimise their activity, stability and yield; and Deploy these enzymes through industrial-scale production and processing. The website address is: http://www.port.ac.uk/cei

The Senior Research Associate opportunity is available within the Engineer – Enzyme Production group which is exploiting the patented array technology for RNA synthetic biology applications of the CEI pipeline. While other phases of the CEI pipeline will identify and develop some important enzymes, it is this work manipulating transcription and translation using molecular switches (e.g. riboswitches, sRNAs, aptamers) which will increase the efficiency and effectiveness of their production, ensuring both commercial viability and the required global impact.

Candidates should have a PhD, or equivalent experience, in biochemistry and molecular biology,  as well as practical skills working with RNA. A drive to succeed, strong communication and organisational skills and experience working as part of a team would be valuable within this position. The post provides an excellent opportunity for personal and career development.

Informal enquiries are actively encouraged and can be made to Prof. A. Callaghan (02392 842055), Anastasia.Callaghan@port.ac.uk.

The University of Portsmouth is an equal opportunities employer, fully committed to creating and sustaining a diverse and inclusive workforce. We welcome applications from all backgrounds and communities.
