School of Biological Sciences – Centre for Enzyme Innovation (CEI)

Innovation Fellow

Employment type:  Fixed-term contract (until 31 July 2024)

Employment basis:  Full-time

Salary:  £40,322 - £49,553 per annum

Post number: ZZ005315

Date published: 09 December 2019

Closing date:  19 January 2020

Interview date:  06 February 2020

The University of Portsmouth is a dynamic and ambitious institution with a track record of success. One of only four universities in the south east of England to achieve a Gold rating in the Teaching Excellence Framework, it is also ranked 21st in the 2020 Guardian League Table University Guide, and 113th in the Times Higher Young University World Rankings.

With the recent award of £5.8 million from Research England, the Centre for Enzyme Innovation (CEI) creates a flagship research hub, focused on delivering transformative enzyme-enabled solutions for some of the world’s most pressing environmental and industrial challenges, including biofuel production, plastic waste degradation and reuse, and unlocking natural resources: http://www.port.ac.uk/cei

Supported by Expanding Excellence in England (E3) funding from Research England, the CEI builds on our current research excellence and activities, and will provide increased capacity and capability around a unique and transformative research pipeline with application to the circular economy. Within this, we: Discover new enzymes from the environment that break down plastics; Engineer these enzymes and their production mechanisms to optimise their activity, stability and yield; and then deploy them through industrial-scale production and processing.

We are seeking to recruit an exceptional ambitious individual to play a lead role in supporting the CEI’s engagement with industry, build robust relationships and enable the rapid adoption of CEI discoveries into industry. The role will ensure that the discoveries the CEI makes (jointly with industry) will become the next generation of products and processes, will transform business performance and have significant positive societal impact - ensuring that the CEI’s strategic business-focused objectives are met.

We are looking for someone with time-served experience of bringing stakeholders together, delivering the adoption of new technologies into industrial/commercial processes, and the successful development of new products.

The role requires someone with a proven track-record of undertaking business development, excellent skills in client relationship development and management to join our team of researchers, business engagement and commercialisation professionals. Someone who can play a lead role in building an extensive and effective ecosystem of business partnerships with the CEI.  Whilst experience of working with universities to transfer technologies, skills and knowledge between academia and industry is desirable, it is not essential.

The Innovation Fellow will work closely with the academic research team, developing and implementing approaches that enhance their capacity and capability to undertake innovative work with business that has a high potential for commercial exploitation. Central to this will be working with the University’s wider business-facing and commercialisation teams to deliver the CEI’s technology transfer, collaborative industrial research, commercialisation, investment and income objectives.

The CEI is playing a lead role in the University of Portsmouth’s wider ambitions to develop innovative and transformative approaches to delivering business and societal impact from its academic activity, and we welcome applicants with a strong drive to make a difference and innovative approaches to achieve this.

Informal enquiries are actively encouraged and can be made to Professor John McGeehan (Director of the CEI) by email to: john.mcgeehan@port.ac.uk or to Jacky Dillon (CEI Manager), by email to: jacky.dillon@port.ac.uk.
