The University of Portsmouth is a dynamic and ambitious institution with a track record of success. One of only four universities in the south east of England to achieve a Gold rating in the Teaching Excellence Framework and ranked in the top 150 in the Times Higher Young University World Rankings.

The School of Mathematics and Physics wishes to appoint a Physics lecturer. Candidates should be passionate about teaching and research, and possess the appropriate dynamism, expertise and qualifications to contribute to the academic development of our Physics programmes. You will have a doctorate degree in a relevant specialism, and substantial experience at post-doctoral or equivalent level. The appointees will have developing international research profiles as evidenced by publications in leading journals, and expertise in an applied physics area.

We are keen to develop our capability in material science and solid state physics in particular, someone with teaching experience who enjoys lab environment and has experience of working with experiments such as: AFM, MBE, MOKE, TCSP, Plasma Sputtering and VSM. But we would also welcome applications from other specialisms consistent with applied physics research. You will be expected to enthusiastically integrate your research into the physics programmes, thus contributing to the University's strategy for research-informed teaching.

The School of Mathematics and Physics was formed within the Faculty of Technology in August 2018combining our established mathematics provision with our growing physics activity. Physics has recently benefitted from substantial investment by the University in new laboratories and capital equipment. Physics staff work closely with the Institute of Cosmology and Gravitation, and 96% of our physics research outputs were rated as world leading or internationally excellent in REF 2014.

Applications are particularly encouraged from traditionally under-represented groups in science. We are committed to maintaining and developing organisational and cultural practices that promote gender equality and create a better working environment for men and women.

Prospective candidates are encouraged to seek informal discussions with the Head of School, Professor Daniel Thomas, 02392 84 6366, daniel.thomas@port.ac.uk, or the Associate Head of Physics Dr Hooshyar Assadullahi, 02392 842296, hooshyar.assadullahi@port.ac.uk.

As an equal opportunities employer, we welcome applications from all suitably qualified persons and all appointments will be made on merit. As we are committed to the principles of the Race Equality Charter Mark, we would particularly welcome applications from the Black, Asian and Minority Ethnic (BAME) community who are currently under-represented at this level in this area.
