             Senior Research Associate - £30,395 - £34,189 per annum

Post number: ZZ005186

Date published: 11 March 2019

Closing date: 09 April 2019

Interview date:  26 April 2019

The Centre for Healthcare Modelling and Informatics (CHMI) has a world-leading reputation for work on clinical outcome modelling. This includes the analysis of routinely collected clinical data to build models of the risk of adverse clinical outcomes to identify sick and deteriorating hospital patients. Recently we have undertaken analyses related to the National Early Warning Score (NEWS). NEWS converts vital signs measurements (e.g. pulse, blood pressure, temperature) into a simple numeric indicator of the seriousness of a patient's condition, facilitating escalation of the level of care when necessary.

CHMI is looking to appoint a full-time, fixed-term Research Fellow or Senior Research Associate to work on a number of our cutting-edge clinical outcome modelling projects. This post is intended to provide a stepping stone for a highly motivated and able early-career researcher to develop themselves as a data scientist working with healthcare data, and to move towards a fully-established, independent and externally-funded research career.  Within the time-frame of the post, there will be opportunities for you to apply for a prestigious externally-funded intermediate fellowship to continue your research career at CHMI.

Successful candidates at Research Fellow level will be expected to pursue an independent programme of innovative research, contribute to and lead on the production of high quality research outputs including high quality publications, present their work to scientific audiences and have a role in the supervision of postgraduate research students.

There will also be the opportunity to contribute to an existing project to derive evidence-based protocols for patient surveillance on general hospital wards, and a wide range of other activities with our collaborators at Portsmouth Hospitals NHS Trust, the University of Oxford, the University of Southampton and elsewhere.

All our projects involving programming work to analyse large datasets. The successful candidate will have excellent numeracy and programming skills in R, MATLAB or a similar statistical language. Previous experience of working with health data is not essential.

A PhD or equivalent in a relevant discipline and a track record of good publications are essential to be appointed as Research Fellow; these are desirables for the post of Senior Research Associate.

This post is offered as a fixed-term contract to 31 March 2021 but may be extended.

At the University of Portsmouth we value diversity and welcome applications from all sections of the community, and in particular from under-represented groups.

Informal enquiries can be addressed to Prof Jim Briggs (jim.briggs@port.ac.uk); only applications submitted through the University's vacancies system will be considered.

Although the post is available as either a Research Fellow or Senior Research Associate, only one appointment will be made. Please note each post has a different person specification/ job description, and you should indicate in the ‘reasons for applying section’ whether you wish to be considered for Research Fellow or Senior Research Associate post or both.
