The School of Art, Design and Performance at the University of Portsmouth, is seeking to appoint a Senior Lecturer in Musical Theatre to join our team at an exciting stage in our development. Seeking to better represent our diverse student population and enrich our activities, we particularly encourage applications from women and BAME scholar-practitioners in this area.
An established scholar and practitioner, ideally with international connections to industry and the academy, the successful applicant will contribute to the delivery of our core teaching across undergraduate programmes in Musical Theatre and Drama & Performance, along with relevant departmental activities such as recruitment and postgraduate supervision. The successful applicant will also play a key role in consolidating and expanding our current portfolio, and as such, may assume department roles such as Course Leadership or Link Tutor where appropriate. They may specialise in any area of musical theatre, but will have a proven ability to lead students in research informed practice in two or more of the constituent disciplines of musical theatre (acting, singing, dancing, writing, design, etc.).
Our undergraduate course in Musical Theatre is among the most established in the UK, and the School is home to the internationally leading journal, ‘Studies in Musical Theatre (Intellect)’. The successful applicant will join a small but internationally recognised team of musical theatre scholars and practitioners, whose research-informed teaching draws on expertise in historiography and archival research, new musical theatre, and musical theatre in a global/international context. With significant specialist research expertise within the team, working toward REF2021 is a priority, and we are looking to develop postgraduate taught provision and research.
The School of Art, Design and Performance is one of four schools in the Faculty of Creative and Cultural Industries at the University of Portsmouth, and offers taught undergraduate, postgraduate and postgraduate research programmes in a range of cognate subject areas. In joining our small team of established scholars and practitioners, it is anticipated that the post holder will be excited to exploit and explore the opportunities of working within a multidisciplinary creative environment. They will be keen to use this to enhance and augment teaching, research and practice in the school and beyond, as our connections to local and national arts and heritage organisations continues to grow.
In joining the University of Portsmouth, you will be joining a University rated Gold in the national Teaching Excellence Framework (2017). The University is home to 23,000 students, including 4,000 international and EU students from 130 countries, along with 2,500 full-time staff. As an institution, Portsmouth is ranked 21st in the UK (Guardian University Guide 2019).
